Choosing profile photographs with personality

Show your style and everyday interests while protecting identifying information and asking permission before including anyone else.

Make the introduction recognisable

A clear, recent portrait and an image of an interest or outfit can give a conversation a helpful starting point. Choose photographs that represent how you currently present yourself. A profile does not need to focus on one garment or one part of an outfit. You can show an interest in hosiery through your description and still make room for the rest of your personality.

Review the background

Before posting, look for addresses, work badges, documents, reflections and other details you did not intend to share. Obtain permission before including a partner, friend or anybody else in an image. Do not use somebody else’s pictures to stand in for your own identity. If you prefer not to share a photograph publicly, explain your privacy preference honestly rather than promising access you do not intend to provide.

Keep requests optional

A person may prefer to keep additional photographs private or to share them only after a longer conversation. Accept that choice without repeated requests or pressure to prove their interest. Ask before saving, forwarding or publishing an image. You can update your own photographs as your preferences change; a past profile picture never becomes a commitment to dress, meet or behave in a particular way.
